School closings

Heavy snow and high winds have prompted some schools in northern Illinois to change plans for Tuesday. Here's what we know so far:

Colleges and Universities

Northern Illinois University is open Tuesday and all classes -- virtual AND in-person -- are on as scheduled. Anyone going to the university, especially in the morning, is encouraged to park in the parking deck so parking lots can be plowed.

Rock Valley College is remote-only Tuesday. Online classes are on as scheduled, but students should NOT go to campus.

Plenty of schools surveyed staff and parents over the past several months, asking about e-learning challenges and seeking suggestions going into the new COVID-affected school year.

Schools don’t as often ask the students themselves, especially younger kids. The West Aurora School District did ask its students, from Pre-K all the way through high school, how they felt about schools being closed.

All semester long, Northern Illinois University has been fighting a losing battle against the weather. The extreme snow and cold affecting the midwest caused the campus to close multiple times already. Ice forced yet another delay Tuesday morning. Student Max Kersten thinks NIU has made responsible decisions.

"In [light] of all the closings NIU has done a pretty good job in terms of informing us on when the campus has been closed," he said. "Which gives us time to prepare and still get the material done for our classes on our own."

Closings:

Nearly all schools in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin are closed. Many local government offices are closed, as well.

Northern Illinois University is canceling classes and university offices are closed for Friday, Feb. 9. at all locations. The school is reopening for events starting at 4:00 Friday afternoon, including those scheduled to commemorate Feb. 14, 2008. Normal operations resume at midnight.

Rockford Public Schools pushed back its final exams because of inclement weather.

Normally, these would have started Monday.  But principals closed down schools when a fifth of their bus fleet failed to start Monday morning.

Principals agreed to push back finals by one day.  This means students will take their last set of exams on January 9, after winter vacation.  That date also is the end of the grading period.

Teachers plan to hold a 20-minute review session before each test that day.  RPS says families should expect report cards by January 16th.

All Rockford Public Schools are closed today, according to an announcement on the school district website. All district after-school activities also are canceled, the announcement said.

The district reports that "a large percentage" of the district-owned school buses would not start because of the extreme cold.

The Administration Building, Student Assignment Center/Sterling Holley and Operations Support Center are open.

Rockford needs fewer, larger elementary schools. More modern classrooms. One early education center for each quadrant of the city. It’s all part of a $250 million plan to improve  every elementary school, except for the 7 to 9 targeted for closing.
