Thousands of Northern Illinois University students return to DeKalb this week.
A fleet of golf carts and 1,300 volunteers will greet nearly 3,000 residence hall students on Friday. Peak traffic usually takes place over the lunch hour.
For those trying to navigate the city that day, NIU Police Commander Donald Rodman has some advice:
“If you live in the area and you have to travel through the campus area, I would recommend trying to stay further east if possible. But if you do need to travel that way, I would just ask that you be patient and understand that it’s a great day for the university and the community.”
Officials say there will be no road closures, but most traffic will be on Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue in DeKalb. Signage will start at the Annie Glidden exit for I-88 to help control congestion, and some may be re-directed to side roads as well.
