The state of Illinois will spend more than $100 million on high-speed rail improvements between Chicago and St. Louis.
The governor's office says the project will create hundreds of construction jobs over the next few years. In all, the state has spent more than $350 million dollars on the rail route.
According to a news release, the money will allow the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Union Pacific Railroad to move forward with construction of a new bridge over the Kankakee River near Wilmington, as well as other safety and capacity enhancements along the corridor between Joliet and Dwight.
