Perspective: Maybe It's A Choice

According to scientific studies, no single gene can be found to account for it.  But in the spirit of openness and tolerance, I do my best to accept those with it.

It seems to be found in every culture, every ethnic group, and has been referenced in ancient literature, including the Bible.  Could it possibly be caused by multiple genes, biological influences, or epigenetic factors?  One thing is certain--I am determined to accept those affected by it, even if it is a choice.

To be honest, some extended family members revealed it, even early in life. I've seen it among friends, classmates, co-workers, and fellow church members. Come to think of it, I now remember seeing it among some of the young students I once taught.

It is one of those differences which shouldn't really be a concern to anyone, though sometimes it is. But of course, my curiosity is aroused by this seeming anomaly, so I've made a decision.

In the spirit of love and acceptance, I will approach someone I know with this condition and diplomatically ask that individual, "Do you think you could tell me just when in your life you made the decision...to be left-handed?"

I'm Jim Kline, and that is my Perspective.
