The Luthier Next Door | The Under Rocks podcast

Tom Asher in his workshop, 2025.

Tom Asher in his workshop, 2025.

In a quiet wooded neighborhood on the south side of Rockford, there’s a man making magic in his basement workshop. Tom Asher uses the tools, knowledge, and creative skills he’s gathered over a lifetime as a musician, woodworker, and artist -- to craft violins.

Dan Libman

People in the Rockford area may know Asher as the man they turn to to fix their ailing stringed instruments, or the trumpet and viola player with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, or the maker of intricately-inlaid wooden boxes, or that guy they see on his bike all the time. He also has a fascinating family history, up to and including his musically-talented wife and two daughters. Thanks so much to Tom for sharing his story with us. Check out his website woodenbackroads.com.
