New Mayors Elected In DeKalb, Cortland, Sycamore, And Genoa

Sarah Jesmer

With all precincts reporting, unofficial totals show Cohen Barnes has won the election to be the next mayor of DeKalb. He received 2,391 votes to claim 62% of the votes against challenger Carolyn Morris. Barnes and Morris met several times in forums to outline their vision for DeKalb, including a forum hosted by WNIJ, the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County, and the DeKalb Public Library.

The question of whether to allow backyard chickens in DeKalb failed by a margin of 53% No and 46% Yes.

The top three candidates for the DeKalb School Board District 428 are Amanda Harness, Ariel Owens, and Deyci Ramirez. There were five candidates in that race who appeared in a forum talking about their goals for the school district on April 1, 2021.

In other contested races, Barb Larson appears to have claimed DeKalb's Ward 2 aldermanic seat in the unofficial tally over challengers J.J. Wett and Wes Hoadley.

DeKalb's Ward 4 race remains extremely close. The unofficial tally as of April 6 has Gregory Perkins with 296 votes and Matthew Keys with 292 votes.

It appears Jim Luebke's active write-in campaign was not enough to defeat Mary Hess for DeKalb Township Supervisor. The two met in a forum hosted by WNIJ and the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County. Luebke had challenged his name not being included on the ballot. Hess received 2,365 votes. Write-in votes tallied 780.

In Sycamore, Steve Braser received 81% of votes to be elected mayor. Challenger Adam Benn stopped campaigning but stayed in the race.

In Cortland, Mark Pietrowski won the election for mayor with 309 votes. Douglas Corson had 137 votes and Charmaine Fioretto had 127. The three appeared in a forum for their goals as mayor hosted by WNIJ and the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County.

In Genoa, Jonathon Brust has been elected mayor with 395 votes. Challenger Dennis DiGuido had 286 votes.

In Sandwich, Todd Latham has been elected mayor with 53% of votes over opponents Richard Robinson and James McMaster.
