Illinois Candidates Begin Filing Petitions For March Primary

Wikimedia

Starting Monday, Illinois candidates began filing petitions to get their names on the March 20th Democratic and Republican primary ballots.

Candidates have until next Monday, December 4, to file their petitions with local election officials for county offices, or with the State Board of Elections for state and congressional offices. That’s followed by another week when objections to those petitions can be filed.

Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten says only then does work begin on actually laying out the ballot.

“After December 11th we begin ballot preparation," he said. "And we await certifications from the state of Illinois as to who our state and federal candidates are, so that we can begin our full ballot preparation to be ready for voting to start in late January.”

Early voting starts in late January. As of Tuesday morning, 490 candidates have filed paperwork with the state Board of Elections.
