DeKalb County Board Puts Forth Property Tax Referendum To Fund Public Health

DeKalb County

The DeKalb County Board voted 18-6 toward putting a property tax hike on the ballot to fund public health.

The Daily Chronicle reports the proposal would bring in about $500,000 per year through a property tax of $9.57 for every $100,000 of equalized assessed value.  For someone owning a $150,000, this would mean a yearly increase of about $15.

The DeKalb County Health Department has been using reserve funds for the past three years to pay for existing services, and laid off 26 permanent employees over the past six years.  Officials highlighted the need for additional funding, as reserves are nearly depleted.

Voters will make their decision April 5.
