Hundreds of Winnebago County residents demonstrated their opposition to the Great Lakes Basin Railroad at a public meeting Monday.
The event at Winnebago High School was meant to provide more information about the project. The line would run From Wisconsin to Indiana through parts of Winnebago County so that it could bypass congested Chicago freight traffic. However, the Rockford Register-Star reports many residents believe the construction will have an adverse effect on farms, school bus routes, and the environment.
Great Lakes Basin’s parent company already abandoned a plan to build the railroad through Boone County, and they’re currently working on a federal environmental review.
