Crisis Pregnancy Centers Sue Gov. Rauner Over Recent Abortion Law
Several northern Illinois crisis pregnancy centers are suing the governor over an amendment to the Health Care Right of Conscience Act.
The provision requires health care providers disseminate information about abortion to women that ask about the procedure, even if they have a "conscience-based objection.”
The Rockford Register-Star reports the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Rockford, seeks to prevent the state from enforcing the provision or penalizing those who violate it.
The centers argue the amendment violates their rights to free speech and religion by turning them into a “referral service” for local abortion clinics.
A hearing date has not been set.
