In This Study, Illinois Is Not Number One - And That's Good

WalletHub

Illinois usually is cited as having one of the highest overall tax burdens in the nation.  But when it comes to taxes, Illinois is not number one.

That distinction goes to the state of New York, followed by Hawaii, Maine, Vermont and Minnesota. That’s according to personal financial website Wallethub. Illinois came in eighth in the study.

Among neighboring states, the site ranked Iowa at 14 in the nation for overall tax burden, Wisconsin at 16, Kentucky at 21, Indiana at 24, and Missouri at 38.

Wallethub says it compiled the list by comparing the 50 states across three types of state tax burdens for the study — property taxes, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income in the state.

Guy Stephens produces news stories for the station and coordinates the online events calendar, PSAs and arts calendar announcements. In these roles, Stephens helps keep the listening community informed about what is happening at the national and local levels. He has degrees in music and spent several years as a classical host on WNIU. After nearly 20 years with Northern Public Radio, the best description of his job may be "other duties as required."
