Attorneys Due In Court Over Illinois Redistricting Lawsuit

mapamendment.org

Advocates for reforming how Illinois draws its political boundaries will try to persuade a judge that their proposed November ballot measure meets constitutional muster.

Attorneys are due in the court Thursday for oral arguments.

The Independent Map Amendment group says letting an independent commission run redistricting would remove politics from the process.

An attorney linked to top Illinois Democrats filed the lawsuit claiming the measure isn't constitutional.

In 2014, a judge ruled a similar effort couldn't be on the ballot. Organizers of the remap group say they've learned from that effort.

The ballot question would ask voters if an 11-member commission should draw Illinois' political maps.

State election officials have determined the question has enough valid signatures to be on November's ballot and are awaiting the outcome of the lawsuit.
