Illinois Treasurer Race Changes Course, Frerichs Takes Lead

State of Illinois

Updated 6:53 a.m.: More information added.

The race for Illinois treasurer changed course yesterday. Late votes showed Democrat Mike Frerichs is now ahead of Republican Tom Cross by 3,000.

Until yesterday, Cross held a small lead of about 500 votes, making it the closest statewide race in at least 100 years.

Totals linger as election authorities count absentee ballots and provisional ones, such as those cast by voters who registered on Election Day, which was allowed in Illinois for the first time this year.

Other close contests include a Supreme Court justice's bid for retention and a Democratic incumbent state representative who is barely holding on to her seat. That is according to early projections.

Election winners won't be announced until Nov. 30.
