Rauner Claims Madigan, Cullerton Profit Off Of Insider Deals

WUIS/Peoria Public Radio

Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has been critical of the Democrats he’s negotiating with, saying they have profited off of insider deals.

But he hasn’t said how -- specifically.

Rauner has to negotiate with Democratic leadership in the legislature to get his agenda approved. He’s calling out House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton for personally benefitting from their positions of power.

They’re both also Chicago attorneys for separate law firms.

When asked, Rauner wouldn’t say specifically if there was a grant, contract, project, bill, or overall policy from which Madigan or Cullerton have personally profited. Instead Rauner spoke generally, saying they’re part of the Chicago political machine.

“It’s built on a large government insiders’ dominance,” Rauner said.

Cullerton’s office would not comment on Rauner’s accusations. Madigan has said he rejects clients in his law practice who seek a state benefit.
