Illinois Department On Aging Spotlights Elder Abuse

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month.

Illinois Department On Aging spokeswoman, Veronica Vera, says five cases go unreported for every one that comes to light. The number of abuse cases increased in recent years, but Vera says this may simply be due to increased reporting. She notes there are several types of abuse.

"Financial exploitation would be highly associated with emotional abuse, which is reported in 40% of the cases," she said. "Also, passive neglect is a very common form of abuse in which a caregiver will neglect to provide the victim with basic needs such as food or shelter, clothing or medical care."

If you suspect someone is being abused, or are a victim of abuse, the Department On Aging recommends calling their hotline at 866-800-1409.
