Jet fuel sales took off at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport earlier this week.
It comes in the wake of a May 1 City Council decision to lower the price of the fuel to $2.59 per gallon, the lowest price in the region. The move was meant to attract more customers to the airport.
The Daily Chroniclereports seven jets bought more than 2,000 gallons of fuel Wednesday, including a 569-gallon fill-up for a single jet, which generated more than $1,400 in revenue.
Airport manager Tom Cleveland said the price drop brings new customers into the airport. He noted that the facility already has sold more than 3,000 gallons this month. However, DeKalb Public Works Director Tom Holdeman says the adjusted price of fuel means the airport needs to sell 11,000 gallons of fuel per month to break even. The city will cut off the adjusted price "experiment" if losses reach $20,000.
