Winnebago County Board Rejects Funding For New Correction Officers, Bailiff

Winnebago County

The Winnebago County Board rejected a budget amendment that would provide funding to 17th Judicial Circuit Court Chief Judge Joe McGraw for four juvenile detention corrections officers, a bailiff, and law books.

Board members noted a $2.5 million deficit in the 1% public safety sales tax and a $1.7 million deficit in the county's general fund in rejecting the request.

The Rockford Register Star reports Judge McGraw and the County Board have been at odds since the previous board's members denied $173,126 to pay for salary and benefits of probation staff.

Total salaries for the bailiff and corrections officers under the current proposal would have totaled about $250,000.
