Rockton officials unanimously approved a resolution opposing the construction of an asphalt plant.
Northern Illinois Service Co. submitted a special use permit request in October to build the plant along Black's Quarry on Illinois Route 2. This site is on unincorporated property just outside Rockton.
However, residents expressed their concerns about increased noise, odor, truck traffic, and a possible decline in property values. City officials sided with more than 100 residents in approving the resolution at Tuesday's meeting.
The measure now goes to the Winnebago County Zoning Board of Appeals, according to the Rockford Register-Star. The body will consider the permit tonight at a meeting in Rockford. It will take place at 5:30 in room 303 of the County Administration Building. However, it could move to Veterans Memorial Hall on North Main Street to accommodate a larger crowd.
