Former Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd has turned himself in to face perjury charges.
Rudd was indicted Wednesday on charges he lied on nominating petitions when seeking re-election in 2016. He dropped out of the Democratic primary after it was determined he didn't have enough valid signatures on his nominating petitions.
Rudd posted $15,000 bail and was released Thursday. He declined to comment on the case against him.
Defense attorney Jed Stone said he is having trouble understanding the motivation for the charges.
Undersheriff Raymond Rose said Wednesday an investigation revealed some of Rudd's petition papers contained signatures for people who were dead or who later claimed they never signed the petitions.
Rudd made headlines when he questioned whether Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Gliniewicz was murdered in the line of duty in 2015. It was later determined he committed suicide.
