Gov. Bruce Rauner has invited the top Illinois General Assembly leaders to a meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, but only three of the four have agreed to take part.
Democratic House Speaker Mike Madigan had not responded as of Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Rauner said he sent out invitations Thursday and has received commitments from Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Republican leaders Sen. Jim Durkin and Rep. Christine Radogno.
The governor said he expects that Madigan will be at the meeting, even without a response to the invitation.
The meeting follows an expensive, grueling election campaign in which a total of six Democratic legislative seats were won by Republicans, putting an end to the Democratic veto-proof “supermajority” in the Illinois House. Democrats still hold that 60-percent status in the Senate.
The legislature is scheduled to begin its annual veto session Tuesday.
Rauner said he hopes Illinois lawmakers resume work to end an epic budget standoff and not just focus on trying to override his vetoes. Illinois hasn't had a budget in more than 16 months.
