Ex-Illinois Lawmaker Says Woman Extorted Him On Facebook

A top Republican in the Illinois House who resigned in July citing cybersecurity issues now says he engaged in "inappropriate online conversations" with a woman who extorted him into wiring money to the Philippines.

Ron Sandack of Downers Grove, the former GOP floor leader, released a statement Friday alleging that the woman "lured" him into the inappropriate discussion on Facebook. Sandack is married with two children.

Sandack's statement followed the release of additional information from a police report about the incident that he filed in July.

The report, still heavily redacted, says Sandack accepted a "friend" request with the woman on Facebook and exchanged messages and a Skype phone call before she demanded he wire an undisclosed amount of money to the Philippines.

Police closed the investigation without filing charges.
