Teen Room, Increased Accessibility Are Part Of DeKalb Library Renovations

Colorful skulls adorn the walls of a room in the DeKalb Public Library. That's because teenagers chose the design of the “teen room” in the library’s renovation.

The Haish Building has been getting a makeover for the past six months. An extension opened earlier this year.

Some changes include removal of different levels to increase accessibility and technological upgrades.

There’s a full computer lab, 3-D printers, and more meeting rooms.

Edith Craig is the library’s communications manager. She says part of the construction involved removing several different levels to make the library wheelchair friendly.

“We promised the community a library to be 100 percent accessible. And we feel like we’ve accomplished that," said Craig. "Everything in this building can be accessed by anyone, universally."

Craig says the community will reap benefits from the changes.

“Kish College will be holding classes here that they couldn’t have before," she said, "and so we’re seeing new things come out of this space.”

The library will be closed between Aug. 20 and Sep. 9 for finishing touches.

A grand re-opening is scheduled Sep. 10.
