The DeKalb Public Library re-opened to the public Monday morning beginning with a grand opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting.
The theme of the day is "Community."
Library Director Dee Coover says the expansion focuses on more than books.
"The two areas that we have probably spent the most time with are technology and children. How do children learn, and to be visionary about technology, or as visionary as anybody can be."
The original building was dedicated in 1931 and financed by a bequest from barbed-wire millionaire Jacob Haish.
This century’s addition was possible due to a grant from the state of Illinois. The $11.6 million boost is the state’s largest library grant to date, according to Secretary of State spokesman Henry Haupt.
The total cost of the project is around $25 million which includes borrowing and private contributions.
The 46,000 square foot addition more than doubles the size of the library.
The new wing replicates the Art Deco design of the original building, which is still under renovation and is expected to open later this year.
