815 < 5 is a pair of podcasts bringing you the latest news and events in and around the 8-1-5 area code in less than five minutes! It was produced by students at Northern Illinois University's Journalism 302 News Reporting course during the Spring semester. In May 2022, 815<5 received 1st Place in the Outstanding Radio Newscast category from the Illinois News Broadcasters Association's statewide student awards.

NIU This Week: Political scientist breaks down Ukraine crisis, faculty art gallery opens

Political Science professor Ches Thurber studies global conflict and security. He fears a humanitarian crisis that could include significant loss of life. And he says the situation has ramifications for the rest of the globe.

“Gas prices were already high at the beginning of this crisis,“ he said. “And we've seen them continue to escalate, and directly out of anticipation that supplies of oil and gas may be cut off or limited as a result of further escalation of this conflict.”

Thurber also says cyber warfare already used in Ukraine could be used elsewhere.

In other news, NIU Student Government Association elections are rapidly approaching. Elections will determine NIU’s student leaders for 2022-2023. Leaders will serve as the voice for the students of NIU. The first meeting will be held Monday Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.

Entertainment: 

NIU’s School of Art and Design began their Biennial Faculty Art Show at Altgeld Hall on Wednesday. The gallery will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The department’s website offers several other time slots throughout the week.

NIU’s Center for Black Studies will be hosting an R&B yoga event Thursday night at 6:00 pm. Registration is required.

Meanwhile, the Campus Activities Board will host a Black History Month-themed trivia event on Monday from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the lower den of the Holmes Student Center.

Sports

With under two weeks to go in the regular season, the NIU basketball teams are making final pushes into the postseason.

The Men’s team lost a close one to Eastern Michigan Tuesday, with the Huskies losing 74 to 72.

NIU currently sits in ninth place in the MAC standings, one game behind Central Michigan and a spot in the MAC Championship Tournament.

They look to bounce back at the Convo against Buffalo Thursday at 7 before heading to Buffalo for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.

The women’s basketball team was victorious Wednesday night, beating Eastern Michigan by a score of 72 to 65.

The team moves up in the MAC standings, tied for fifth place with Kent State.

They hope to keep the wins coming on a road trip to Ball State on Saturday, tip off is at Noon.

And, Junior Brookelyn Sears was named MAC Gymnast of the Week this week.

Sears posted the third highest point total in NIU gymnastics history in last Sunday’s meet, earning scores of nine-point-eight or higher in all four of her events.

Weather

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 12 p.m. Thursday into the morning hours of Friday, due to a possible snowstorm. DeKalb is expected to get 2-5 inches of snow over the next two days. We’ll have a high of 24 degrees and a low of 18 degrees.

Friday will be mostly cloudy with a high of 26 degrees In the afternoon and a low of 13 going into nighttime.

On Saturday, the sunshine should be back to melt all the snow away. We’re expecting a high of 35 during the day dropping down to 23 at night.
