A man was shot and killed by DeKalb police as officers responded to a call early Monday morning in the 100 Block of Tilton Park Drive in DeKalb, Illinois.

The DeKalb Police Department confirmed the deceased as Kristopher Kramer, 33, of DeKalb.

According to a news release, a woman contacted the DeKalb Police Department to report a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they escorted the woman to a safe location and tried to make contact with a man inside the home.

The release says they were able to speak with the man and convince him to come out of the home.

That’s when police say he grabbed a large “Samurai” style sword and “advanced towards [the] officer with the weapon over his head and pointed at DeKalb P.D. Officers.”

Police say they told him to drop the weapon and then deployed a taser and bean bag projectile before an officer fired one round from a firearm in the chest.

The man was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital by the DeKalb Fire Department. He died at the hospital.

The involved officer in the shooting has been placed on administrative duties awaiting a complete investigation of the incident. That investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police.
