The top House Republican in Springfield says members of his party will not be supporting higher taxes in 2015.
Gov. Bruce Rauner is still negotiating his proposed budget cuts with lawmakers.
But House Republican Leader Jim Durkin says members of his party won’t vote for higher taxes to avoid cuts.
"It’s going to be a difficult year. But the fact is Republicans will not be supporting any revenue in this next general assembly," Durkin said.
He says, furthermore, that Republicans understand that means there will be less money - and they will take the necessary action.
"We are going to be putting votes on cuts," he said. "Make no mistake about that."
Senate Democrats heard testimony yesterday from human service providers who are bracing for state cuts to programs that help parents of developmentally disabled kids, and housing for disabled adults.
