Colleges campuses in Illinois would be completely smoke-free under legislation that passed the Illinois House this week.
Smoking indoors is already prohibited in most places in Illinois. This new ban would also cover outdoor areas of state-supported universities and community colleges.
Representative Ann Williams, D-Chicago, says her proposal is aimed at improving public health.
"This is an important initiative to make sure that more and more people aren't devastated by the impacts of second-hand smoking. And frankly, the science supports this a hundred percent," Williams said.
Critics say smoking regulation is better left to local control.
