Illinois regulators have issued a report on this month’s landfill leak that sickened dozens of students and teachers at a DeKalb County school.
Officials say they still aren't sure what kind of gas may have been floating through the air at Cortland Elementary.
But the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency cited the owners of a landfill near the school for a series of violations. An agency official confirms to WNIJ that the issue will be reviewed by state Attorney General’s office for further action.
In the meantime, the IEPA says it’ll work to get an underground sample of the gas that was released.
But the report says no toxic gasses were detected after the release from the Waste Management landfill.
The agency says the landfill violated an air pollution law and didn't follow permit stipulations. It was also cited for not burning or treating the gas.
A Waste Management spokeswoman says the company's reviewing the report.
The January 14th incident sent dozens of students and staff to the hospital after they complained of nausea.
