Rockford has a new state representative. Litesa Wallace was chosen from five finalists today to replace retired 67th District Democrat Chuck Jefferson.

The Winnebago County Democratic Party interviewed candidates this morning, then announced they had chosen the woman who has served as Jefferson’s chief of staff since 2011. Wallace says she plans to get to work meeting her constituents this weekend.

I'm so happy that I am the person selected. That means that we can continue to serve the over 108-thousand constituents of this district.

Wallace will fill out Jefferson’s term in Springfield: she was also appointed as the Democratic candidate for the seat in the November election. She’s running unopposed.

Wallace says one of her priorities will be living wages: she supports the $10.10 minimum wage proposals. She says she'll also focus on improving education and reducing crime.

The other four finalists for the position were Valeri DeCastris, Burt Gerl, Paul Gorksi, and Jaime Salgado.
