Groups Gathering Across Illinois For Vigils Honoring Justice Ginsburg

Mourners have been gathering at the U.S. Supreme Court since the death Friday of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, leaving flowers, candles, and messages to honor the women's rights icon.

Impromptu vigils are popping up across the nation as people grapple with the loss of a liberal hero and what this means politically.

In Rockford, a coalition of organizations quickly organized a vigil and voter registration event, starting at 6:00 p.m. Saturday outside the federal courthouse, 327 S. Church St. Democrat Dani Brzozowski, who is running for Congress in Illinois' 16th District, is among those scheduled to speak. The event is being organized by the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford, Women's March Rockford, and Rockford United Labor.

Action Illinois and Resistor Sisterhood are staging a candlelight vigil honoring Ginsburg outside the federal courthouse in Springfield, Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Kendall County Democrats have organized a Saturday night vigil outside the county courthouse in Yorkville, starting at 7:00.

Several organizations, including Planned Parenthood Illinois, are holding a candlelight vigil at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago at 8:00 p.m. Speakers include U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly.
