Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced companies will pay Illinois $2.2 million for deceiving customers into buying cars with over-inflated fuel economy claims.
According to a news release, companies Hyundai and Kia incorporated the erroneous mileage data into estimated ratings displayed on window stickers and in advertisements and promotional campaigns of more than 40,000 cars in Illinois.
Madigan and other states involved in the settlement allege the companies sought to capitalize on the erroneous mileage estimates, and in turn, misled consumers, who consider the mileage per gallon estimates when purchasing vehicles.
The companies began paying restitution in 2013 to directly affected consumers.
