Two men who were arrested following a shooting Thursday night near the Northern Illinois University campus have been charged with murder and two gun-related counts after the shooting victim died Friday.
Police arrested Chicago resident David T. Walls, 18, and Park Forest resident Nico L. Griggs, 27, and charged them with first-degree murder, aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm.
The victim has been identified as Debrece G. Shields, 25, who was associated with addresses in DeKalb and Chicago.
According to a news release, several 911 calls were received reporting a shooting in the parking lot of the apartment complex at 810 Kimberly Drive. DeKalb and NIU Police responded within seconds and found Shields in the parking lot with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He died from his injuries.
Police said this crime does not appear to be a random act and remains under investigation. An NIU spokesperson says none of the men is affiliated with the university.
Walls and Griggs are scheduled to appear for a bond hearing on Sunday.
