Task Force Commander Confirms Fox Lake Officer Shot With Own Gun

provided, Fox Lake Police Department

The lead investigator on the case of a northern Illinois police officer found shot dead has confirmed that the police lieutenant was shot with his own weapon.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko said in a news conference today that Fox Lake Police Lieutenant Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was shot twice, once in the right side, front of his protective vest and once in the upper left chest area.  Filenko  says there was evidence of a struggle at the scene, but tests were inconclusive on whether Gliniewicz fired his gun, or someone else.

Filenko says nine unidentified DNA samples have been found at the scene.  He underlined that the investigation was being conducted as a homicide probe, though detectives weren't ruling anything out, including the possibility of accident or suicide.

Gliniewicz was found Sept. 1 after he radioed that he was pursuing three suspicious men in a remote area of the village. Despite a massive manhunt, police haven't made any arrests or identified any suspects.
