FAA: Aurora Control Facility Now Fully Functional

An Aurora air traffic control facility should be fully functioning today after a two-week shutdown.

The FAA said testing was complete, a full shift of air traffic controllers will return and other sites would transfer control back to the center after midnight.

Authorities said a contract employee cut cables and set fire to a basement telecommunications room Sept. 26. The disruption forced an hours-long shutdown of O'Hare and Midway international airports and meant the cancellation of thousands of flights that disrupted nationwide travel.
The agency is conducting a 30-day review of contingency plans and security protocols for its major facilities as a result.
