Illinois voters went to the polls on Tuesday, March 20, to select the candidates who will face off in the General Election on November 6.These "midterm" elections have drawn a great deal of interest and, in some cases, a surprising number of candidates to statewide and national races.There also were numerous ballot refrenda for voters to decide on, such issues as school construction, fire protection, home rule, and even the sale of liquor.WNIJ News has collated many of the stories presented this election season. You can find them here as a handy reference.

Selected Contests And Ballot Issues From Northern Illinois Counties

Each of the Illinois counties in the WNIJ listening area provides Primary Election results online. You can access that detailed information by clicking on the county (or city) name. Aurora is located under Kane County, and Rockford is under Winnebago County.

The results listed on the websites are unofficial totals and subject to review and certification.

Results for countywide candidates where contests existed and ballot referenda are included in this summary. Details on other offices and propositions can be located by following the county link.

Boone County

There were no contests in either party for elected county offices, but two propositions were on the ballot. All precincts have been counted.

Shall Trustees of Boone County Fire Protection District #2 be elected? 

  • Yes: 1,577
  • No: 648

Shall Boone County be allowed to double the public-safety sales tax from 0.5 percent to 1 percent?

  • Yes: 2,883
  • No: 3,585

Bureau County

There were no county contests on the Democratic ballot, but Republican incumbent County Treasurer Courtney Mabry was defeated by challenger Joseph Birkey. With 100% of precincts reporting:

  • Courtney Yates-Mabry: 1,868
  • Joseph R. Birkey: 2,243

A proposed 0.5% sales tax increase on retail sales of tangible personal property was defeated by just 10 votes.

  • Yes: 3,515
  • No: 3,525

Carroll County

There were no contests in either party for county offices, and there were no countywide ballot issues.

DeKalb County

There were no county-level contests on the ballot for either party, and there were no countywide ballot issues.

DuPage County

The Democratic primary race leader for a seat on the 18th District Circuit Court was ahead by only three votes, with 100% of the precincts reporting.

  • David Stevens: 25,251
  • Jeffrey M. Jacobson: 25,409
  • Raleigh D. Kalbfleisch: 10,806

There are two Republican candidates for DuPage County Sheriff. The current undersheriff was defeated with 100% of the votes counted.

  • Frank Bibbiano: 25,748
  • James Mendrick: 39,198

Several County Board seats are contested in each party, and there is one countywide ballot referendum:

The proposal to dissolve the DuPage County Election Commission and consolidate its functions with the office of the DuPage County Clerk was approved.

  • Yes: 76,887
  • No: 59,256

JoDaviess County

There are no contests for any countywide offices on the Primary Election ballot.

Kane County

All precincts have been counted. Candidates from both parties were running for a seat on the 16th District Circuit Court.

Republicans:

  • Elizabeth Flood: 11,907
  • Thomas M. ("Tom") Hartwell: 11,957
  • David P. Kliment: 3,938

Democrats:

  • Michael J. Noland: 19,632
  • Lark Cowart: 10,815

Two Kane County offices have contests on the Republican Ballot.

For County Clerk:

  • Stanton J. "Stan" Bond: 10,555
  • John A. "Jack" Cunningham: 17,427

Both parties have contests for County Sheriff:

Republicans:

  • Donald E. Kramer: 16,538
  • Kevin Tindall: 11,504

Democrats:

  • Ron Hain: 17,719
  • Willie M. Mayes, Sr.: 14,070

 

City of Aurora

Kendall County

There are no contests for countywide office in either party, but there are contests for some county board seats. There are no countywide ballot issues.

LaSalle County

Some county board seats are contested. There also are ballot contests in the Democratic party for two countywide offices. All 119 precincts have been tallied.

For County Clerk:

  • Lori L. Bongartz: 5,284
  • Vickey Leadingham: 2,652

For County Treasurer:

  • Nikena M. Baer: 4,507
  • Kyle K. Fogle: 3,166

Lee County

There are some county board contests, but there are no countywide ballot issues. Two Republicans are seeking the nomination for county treasurer; with all precincts tallied, the votes are:

  • Paula Meyer: 2,629
  • Melissa Lawrence: 1,205

McHenry County

Totals reflect 100% of the precincts. Two seats are open on the 22nd District Circuit Court. Four Republicans are seeking one of them:

  • Robert Wilbrandt: 8,898
  • Demetri “Pete” Tsilimigras: 7,317
  • Mary Elizabeth McClellan: 6,080
  • Ray Flavin: 1,807

Two Republicans are seeking the other:

  • Tiffany Davis: 4,239
  • Joel Berg: 3,265

There are some county board contests on the primary ballot. Two countywide ballot issues appear to have been approved:

The proposal to eliminate the Recorder of McHenry County and transfer all duties and responsibilities to the office of the County Clerk of McHenry County on December 1, 2020.

  • Yes: 36,198
  • No: 9,816

An advisory referendum suggesting that, given that the McHenry County Board in 2017 reduced its property tax levy by 11.2 percent, local school districts should reduce their property tax levies by at least ten percent by the year 2020.

  • Yes: 34,502
  • No: 12,042

Ogle County

There are no referenda on ballots in Ogle County for this primary election, and there are no contested countywide offices.

Putnam County

There are no referenda on ballots in Putnam County for this primary election, and there are no contested countywide offices.

Stephenson County

There are no countywide ballot issues for this primary election. Two Republicans are competing for the nomination for county Sheriff. No election results were available online early Wednesday.

  • David A. Snyders: 3,514
  • Stephen Schaible: 2,517

Whiteside County

Four Republicans are seeking the nomination for county sheriff. With all precincts tallied, the totals are:

  • Kristopher Schmidt: 2,309
  • Tim Fisher: 342
  • Clark D. Mortensen, Jr.: 1,077
  • Michael W. Lewis: 1,769

Winnebago County

All precincts have been counted. There are contests on the Republican ballot for two countywide offices.

For Sheriff:

  • Gary Caruana: 8,571
  • Kurt K. Ditzler: 5,542

For County Clerk:

  • Lori Gummow: 8,624
  • Magdalena “Maggie Schiro” Luke: 2,362
  • Nancy L. Edwardsen: 2,145

There is one countywide ballot issue:

The office of the Recorder of Deeds of Winnebago County will be eliminated and all duties and responsibilities transferred to, and assumed by, the office of the County Clerk of Winnebago County on December 1, 2020.

  • Yes: 16,682
  • No: 6,282

City of Rockford

There is one citywide referendum on the primary election ballot. All precincts have reported.

The proposal to restore the City of Rockford as a home rule unit was defeated by a margin of 7 percentage points:

  • Yes: 11,543
  • No: 13,362
