A northern Illinois congressman is not throwing his name into consideration for the Speaker of the House, but he does have a few suggestions.
Republican Representative Randy Hultgren says before his colleagues pick a leader, they need to be “leadable.”
“I would love to see Trey Gowdy do it. I think he is a really good guy... very smart.... [and has] great background as a prosecutor.”
He also supports Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, but says he doesn’t blame either if they aren’t up to it.
“I really do believe whoever the next Speaker is, that it will be a significantly different style of allowing members to be able to hear, and allowing the process to work, and empowering committees.”
His idea to get colleagues on the same page would be to get away to a place with no phones, no media, and no staff.
Meanwhile, Illinois’ newest congressman has not decided who he will support for House Speaker.
Republican Darin LaHood took office only about a month ago. He says he wants to interview the candidates to find out what they have to say about moving the country forward…
"We told the American people last year in the election, ‘give us a bigger majority and we’ll be doing all these things.’ we haven’t done very much. We need to use our majority in a very positive, proactive way. So I’m looking for a Speaker who’s gonna help move the ball down the field."
LaHood says among other things, Congress needs to pass a budget, a federal highway reauthorization bill, and a trade agreement that promotes job creation in agriculture.
