A professional theater company in northern Illinois’ Carroll County is seeking high schoolers interested in a career in the theater for a paid apprenticeship program this summer.
Timber Lake Playhouse, near Mt. Carroll, received a grant through the Illinois Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts that will fund four paid positions.
Dan Danielowski is the company’s executive director. He says the apprenticeships provide valuable experience.
“The program allows high school students who are interested in a career in theater an opportunity to work with professionals in the area in all of areas of theater production,” he says.
The program will last 10 weeks. The final three weeks will be spent in a single area of focus of the apprentice’s choosing.
Danielowski says it’s also good for the company.
“We help grow the workforce -- people with more skills in the area. And in fact it seems to be working, as we’ve hired two of our interns from last year into this year’s company,” he says.
Teens will be accepted based on an artistic statement, letter of recommendation and interview. Materials should be sent to admin@timberlakeplayhouse.org.
Danielowski says priority will be given to upperclassmen, those already accepted to university programs and those who demonstrate a clear commitment to pursuing a career in theater.
The window to apply for the apprenticeships is closing fast. Friday, June 17, is the official deadline. However, Danielowski says Timber Lake will accept applications as late as Monday, June 20, with interviews taking place starting that day.
