Rockford
The 2014 Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday May 26, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. The traditional parade route will include the following road closures:
The parade begins at 7th St. and 6th Ave., proceeding northbound on 7th St. to E. State St., westbound on E. State St. to N. Main St., northbound on N. Main St. ending at Veterans Memorial Hall where a ceremony honoring Veterans will follow.
DeKalb
8:30am: Memorial Tank Service at corner of N 1st & Lincoln Hwy in DeKalb
9:00am: Parade starts at North 3rd Street and Lincoln Highway.
9:30am: Program – Ellwood House (east lawn)
Elgin
8:45 am - Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa Street
There will be a Catholic Mass officiated by Rev. Chris Kuhn along with a combined color guard, rifle salute, and the playing of Taps.
9:15 am - Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 US 20
A service to honor those buried at Lakewood Memorial Park located at 30W730 US 20 will be held at the cemetery’s Garden of Honor and include a combined color guard. The observance will conclude with a rifle salute and the playing of Taps.
9:45 am- Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, 270 N. Grove Avenue
Organized by the Elgin Navy Club, this program is especially designed to pay tribute to veterans interred at sea. The program will include an address by Elgin native Dale Moorhouse who served as a U.S. Navy musician from 1966-1969. The Elgin Choral Union and Lt. Mark Hughes, a Chaplain from Great Lakes, will also be part of the program.
The service will conclude with the strewing of flowers into the Fox River, a rifle salute, and the playing of Taps. Elgin’s Veterans Memorial Park is located adjacent to the Gail Borden Public Library at 270 N. Grove Ave
11:00 am - Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard
An Elgin tradition since 1868, this year’s program will pay tribute to those from Elgin who served in the Illinois National Guard. The featured speaker will be Elgin native Sergeant Major David Owsley who has served in the Illinois Army National Guard since 1989 and is a combat veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Freeport
Parade and courthouse ceremony at 10 am. This annual observance is hosted by the Allied Veterans Council.
Rochelle
The 2014 Memorial Day Parade will kick off at the corner of 6th Street and 7th Avenue at 10:00 am. The parade will proceed east on 7th Avenue, south on Lincoln Highway, west on Lincoln Avenue, north on 9th Street, west on 8th Avenue and proceed to the Lawnridge Cemetery. Members of the local VFW Post will hold a ceremony near the Lawnridge Mausoleum at 11:00 am.
