Federal marshals want to sell off hundreds of horses belonging to Rita Crundwell, the former Dixon city comptroller accused of stealing more than $53 million while on the job.

The auction process begins Friday with an online auction. An auction service will start accepting bids at noon. The bidding process will close on Wednesday next week.

Authorities say Crundwell, who faces wire fraud charges, used the money she stole to fund her nationally renowned horse-breeding operation.

93 horses will be sold during the online auction. The remainder of the nearly 400 horses owned by Crundwell will be sold at a live auction Sept. 23-24 in Dixon.

If Crundwell is convicted, officials say proceeds from the sales will be given to the city of Dixon.
