DeKalb Demonstrators Protest To Protect Mueller Investigation

Protests unfolded across the country Thursday evening in response to the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, after the president asked him to step down. Some see this as President Trump directly threatening the investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

MoveOn.org and partners orchestrated the mass protest, including one in DeKalb.

Joseph Kauzlarich, of Sycamore, gathered with more than forty people on the side of a busy intersection. He held a sign reading “Nobody Is Above the Law” referring to the president. The slogan is also the official name of the rallies held country wide.

Kauzlarich said he’s been following Mueller’s special investigation since it first began.

“We need the acting attorney general to recuse himself from the investigation. The administration needs to allow Robert Mueller to conclude his investigation without any interference,” he said.

Demonstrator Suzy Changnon said she felt it was only a matter of time before such a protest was called. She said Trump’s interference with the Attorney General position is a red flag, and that everyone should be paying attention.

“I feel that the president is taking our country in the wrong direction and that affects us anywhere that you live in this country. It doesn’t matter what state you live in, we are on the wrong path at this point,” said Changnon.

Carol Dean, also a DeKalb resident, attended Thursday night to promote democracy and transparency.

“Because we want a democracy not a dictatorship and that affects all of us everywhere in this country from New York, to Hawaii, to Alaska to DeKalb, Illinois,” she said.

Passersby reacted in both support and opposition. Some drivers called out to protestors at the Nobody Is Above The Law rally, saying things like, “What law?” and “Trump 2020.”

The protests come just days after Democrats gained greater control in Congress after the midterm elections.
