Hunters with guns can start shooting deer this weekend.
Illinois has its first deer-hunting season from Friday to Sunday, while Wisconsin’s firearm season runs from this Saturday through next Sunday.
A project manager with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the fall has been uncharacteristically warm, but hunters should expect to see the same level of success as in previous years. He notes that white-tailed deer will be on the move, as it is mating season.
Meanwhile, the Wisconsin State-Journal reportssome hunters are concerned about the state’s deer herd being affected by Chronic Wasting Disease, particularly because of a lack of testing.
This malady is similar to mad-cow disease, but isn’t known to be transmissible to humans. Nevertheless, the state Department of Natural Resources cautions hunters to avoid eating venison from deer that appear diseased.
The second Illinois firearm deer hunt will last four days, beginning December 1st.
