The DeKalb County Community Gardens is distributing 10,000 pounds of food -- that's five tons -- on Giving Tuesday.
Last year, they gave away 5,000 pounds of food. Jackie DiNatale is the communications coodinator for the DCCG. She said they have doubled their efforts because the pandemic and the cold weather mean the need for food is more urgent than ever.
"It's just so important that our community bands together," she said. "A basic need such as food is really vital to the very foundation of everybody's day."
DiNatale said they are sending their two Grow Mobiles to distribute food at eight locations, six of which will be open to the public.
Fresh and non-perishable food will be distributed at the following locations:
• Kirkland, Kirkland Food Pantry
• Genoa, Genoa Area Community Food Hub
• DeKalb, Elder Care Services
• DeKalb, Safe Passage
• DeKalb, DeKalb, New Hope Missionary Baptist
Church, 1201 Twombly Road, 3 to 5 PM*
• DeKalb, New Suburban Apartments Office,
1400 Twombly Road, 4 to 6pm*
• Sandwich, St. Paul the Apostle Parish,
324 W. McKinley Street, 2 pm to 4 PM*
• Malta, Malta Historical Society,
