Northern Illinois University took the rare step of canceling classes early based on a forecast of dangerous weather. NIU announced that the main campus in DeKalb, and campuses in Rockford, Naperville, Hoffman Estates, and Lorado Taft close at midnight until 5 p.m. Monday. Evening classes and events will be held as scheduled. NIU is also closing the main campus in DeKalb from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 p.m. Wednesday because of the extremely cold temperatures expected then. Satellite campuses will be open during those times, however.
The National Weather Service says northern Illinois can expect heavy snow Sunday night into Monday: Rockford is under a Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Monday, with 6 to 9 inches of snow, freezing rain, and strong winds. Further south, the DeKalb area is under a Winter Storm Watch with much of the same predicted, but 3 to 7 inches of snow.
All of northern Illinois can expect record low temperatures Tuesday night and Wednesday, creating potentially deadly situations. In DeKalb, Tuesday night's low could reach -28. Wednesday's high is expected to only reach -15 degrees.
