Department Of Public Health Confirms First West Nile Virus Death

The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first West Nile virus death in the state this year. A LaSalle County resident has died after becoming ill earlier this month.

Melaney Arnold is a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Public Health. She says many infected with the virus will not have symptoms, but everyone should take precautions against mosquito bites.

“Mosquitos are equal opportunity biters," Arnold said. "They’re pretty much going to bite anybody that is around that is not protected with insect repellent or through clothing. But the risk of severe illness is greater for people who are older - older than 50, and those that are immunocompromised.”

Arnold also says the risk will remain through the end of summer and into fall.

“Even though we’re seeing cooler temperatures, West Nile virus is still a concern until we see the first or second hard frost. Mosquitos are still going to be active, so people need to continue to protect themselves,” she said.

21 other cases of the virus have been reported in Illinois this year. Last year, 90 cases of West Nile virus were reported, including 8 deaths.
