'Aging Master Program' Aims To Teach Older Adults How To Maximize Life Post-Retirement

Beloit Senior Center

A group of older adults is heading back to class, but it's not for reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Topics at the Beloit Senior Center include improving eating habits, managing medicines, and having a healthy social life.

Community experts lead the sessions; they have participants do homework and set personal goals.

Paula Schutt, with the Senior Center, says as life expectancy rises, retired people have several more years in free time.

“And so it’s about finding ways to fill those years and make your life as abundant as possible health-wise, and the things that you do, and the way that you spend your time," she said.

Schutt says the program is important to keep people involved in the community.

“I’ve seen people just kind of fade away because when they retire, they don’t involve themselves in anything and they sit and watch TV and they don’t do anything, and they stay home," she said. "And that’s sad because there is so much potential out there.”

Schutt says Wisconsin and Illinois residents can register for the free course. The five-week classes begin 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Apr. 6.

Interested people can register by calling (608) 364-2875.
