Illinois Task Force Ponders Options To Balance Public Ed Funding

An Illinois task force is considering changing the way the state funds public education.

Members heard testimony yesterday from school officials whose districts would lose money if a plan passes.

The measure would shift state aid from wealthy districts to places where property taxes can't support the education system.

Bill Shields is superintendent of an elementary and middle school district in northwest Chicago.

He says families are drawn to his district by the arts, athletics and iPad’s and laptops for each student.

"And to say guess what, we may have to cut back on something because we're gonna be a loser, and your tax dollars are now going to support somebody downstate -- that's something that we've got to work on collectively as a whole as a state. We've got to put our heads together and make this thing work,” Shields said.

Shields says he prefers a plan that won’t harm any districts. The plan is due to be filed within a few weeks.
