Elgin Police Officer Keeps Job After Ferguson Comments On Facebook

Elgin Police Department

An Elgin police officer will be allowed to keep his job after he made Facebook comments against Michael Brown after the Ferguson, Missouri, shooting last year.

The arbitrator ruled Elgin officer Jason Lentz should not be fired for making comments about the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The Elgin Courier-News reports the decision means Lentz must be reinstated to his old job.

Lentz allegedly wrote the Missouri police officer -- in his words -- "did society a favor" by killing Michael Brown. Elgin officials said his comments undercut the city’s credibility.

But, the arbitrator's decision says the city and police department violated a collective bargaining agreement by releasing confidential information about Lentz.

The arbitrator also says Lentz violated department instructions about not commenting on Ferguson. The arbitrator says a six-month suspension for Lentz was warranted.
