Standoff Over At Rockford's Crusader Clinic: Gunman Surrenders To Police

A man is in police custody after he fired shots inside Crusader Community Health's facility on Broadway in Rockford.

The armed suspect, 36-year-old Steven Dummer of Rochelle, threatened suicide on the second floor of the clinic Monday afternoon.

Police were able to peacefully negotiate with the suspect after a standoff lasting nearly four hours. The facility was secured and all occupants were able to evacuate safely.

Dummer eventually surrendered to officers. He was transported to a local hospital to be medically cleared, and later transferred to the Winnebago County Jail.

Dummer is being held on a $100,000 bond, facing charges for Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons.

Earlier Monday

According to an update from the Rock River Times Monday night, only the suspect and responding officers are left in the facility. The suspect is described as being "contained".

There was heavy police presence along Broadway in Rockford today.

Police entered Crusader Community Health Clinic after reports of an active shooter inside the building. Witnesses state the subject was armed on the second floor of the clinic.

Everyone inside the building quickly evacuated to nearby businesses and other safe locations.

The Register-Star reports there are no injuries at this time, but police are still in communication with the subject.

According to tweets from Register-Star reporter Chris Green, "police said the gunman has requested to speak with a family member. Police are trying to make that happen," and "they are prepared to stay as long as it takes for a peaceful resolution."
