Snow Storm Wreaks Havoc In Northern Illinois

Larry Stephens

Northern Illinois is digging out of a winter storm. Travel remains tricky, whether by car, train or airplane.

DeKalb and Sycamore public schools and Northern Illinois University are closed. WNIJ has an updated list of area school closings here.

Gov. Bruce Rauner advises against travel and put state agencies on alert to help local areas as needed. IDOT snow plows have been clearing roadways since the weekend and will continue overnight today.

Amtrak officials canceled morning service between Chicago and Quincy today. Part of the route is closed because of heavy blowing and drifting snow.

More than 1,600 flights were canceled Sunday out of O’Hare and Midway airports, and several Metra commuter lines in northern Illinois are delayed.

The Union Pacific North and Northwest lines have delays up to about 20 minutes. Northbrook passengers on the Milwaukee District North Line may want to consider alternate boarding stations.

Meanwhile, thousands are without power in Illinois. ComEd says roughly 18,000 customers had lost power as of Sunday afternoon. Most are in suburban areas outside Chicago.
