NIU LLI: Place Names: Where and Why with Convener Edward Callary

NIU LLI: Place Names: Where and Why with Convener Edward Callary

Cut and Shoot, Ding Dong, Frognot and Looneyville typify the many odd place names across the state of Texas. With Texas names as a background, we will create the general principles of naming and use examples from Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin. We will see how names become official. The importance of place names in lore and literature will be examined as well as the politics of names and naming. A mystery guest may appear to enliven the festivities, so stay with us for a surprising finish.

This course repeats every Wednesday until February 9.

Convener: Edward Callary is retired from the English Department at NIU and now lives in Texas with his wife, Jean. He has written three books on place names: Place Names of Illinois, Place Names of Wisconsin, and Texas Place Names (with Jean Callary).

The NIU Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), established in 2000, is a member-directed group of individuals primarily age 50 plus who enjoy learning in informal, flexible, non-competitive groups and like connecting with peers who share their interests. No grades, no tests – just Learning for the Fun of It.
